Morton's Neuroma

Schedule Now

WHAT IS MORTON’S NEUROMA

Morton’s neuroma refers to irritation and thickening of tissue surrounding one of the small nerves between the toes, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. This region is exposed to repeated pressure and load during walking, running, and prolonged standing.

Despite the term “neuroma,” the condition is often related to mechanical irritation and compression of the nerve rather than a true tumor. Symptoms are commonly influenced by load tolerance, foot mechanics, footwear pressure, and the ability of surrounding tissues to distribute force effectively during weight-bearing activity.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

• Burning, tingling, or numbness in the forefoot or toes

• Sharp or shooting pain between the toes

• A sensation of standing on a pebble or fold in the sock

• Symptoms that worsen with walking, running, or tight footwear

• Relief when removing shoes or massaging the foot

• Forefoot discomfort during prolonged standing or activity

• Intermittent symptoms that vary with load and pressure

COMMON CONTRIBUTORS TO SLOWER RECOVERY

• Footwear that compresses the forefoot or toes

• Repetitive loading from walking, running, or impact activity

• Altered forefoot mechanics or load distribution

• Reduced strength of the intrinsic foot muscles

• Limited ankle mobility affecting foot loading patterns

• Prolonged standing on hard surfaces

• Inadequate recovery between loading sessions

HOW PHYSIOTHERAPY HELPS

Physiotherapy for Morton’s neuroma focuses on reducing nerve irritation, improving load distribution through the forefoot, and restoring the foot’s ability to tolerate activity. Because symptoms are often related to mechanical compression and altered movement patterns, treatment emphasizes progressive rehabilitation, footwear strategies, and load management rather than rest alone.

Physiotherapy management may include:

• Education on footwear selection and forefoot pressure reduction

• Strengthening of the intrinsic foot muscles and lower limb

• Exercises to improve foot control and load distribution

• Mobility work for the ankle and surrounding joints when indicated

• Activity and load management to reduce nerve irritation while maintaining movement

• Gradual return to walking, running, and higher-load activity

• Padding, taping, or referral for further medical management when appropriate

Recovery timelines vary depending on symptom duration, contributing factors, and activity demands. Many individuals experience meaningful improvement over weeks to months with a structured management approach. Early intervention and appropriate load modification can help reduce persistent nerve irritation and support comfortable weight-bearing.

Experience Relief with Physio Theory

At Physio Theory, metatarsalgia care focuses on identifying why excessive load is occurring through the forefoot and addressing contributing factors within the foot and ankle. Treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, activity level, and goals to support lasting relief and return to daily activity.
